The Soai Rap River Channel - A new major gateway to Southern Economic Hub

On October 12th 2012, Vietnam Prime Minister has approved the ODA loan protocol agreement for dredging the Soai Rap Channel commencing in Q4 2012.

The project consists of dredging a 54-km long section of the Soai Rap river-bed, deepening the channel to -9.5m draft to accommodate 50,000-70,000 GRTvessels toHiep Phuoc portsin general, where SPCT is located and only operational port in the area now.

The ground-breaking of Soai Rap River is scheduled to take place on November 24th 2012 and the project is estimated to be completed in 10 months, making the channel available for commercial operation by Q4 2013. The project will be carried out by a combination of international and local dredging contractors, at a total cost of USD100 million, sourced from the city budget and ODA from Belgium Government.

SPCT deep-water container terminal was designed taking into consideration this project. The Soai Rap channel has several advantages compared to current navigational channel Long Tau:

-       50% reduction of navigation time (about 2 hours),

-       4 times wider,

-       less turningpointsalong channeland

-       15 kilometers distance from the centreof HCM City.

-       This new major gateway will also contribute to the development ofthe economiczones not only in Ho Chi Minh City but also the South Focus Economic Area (HCM City, Dong Nai, Vung Tau, Long An, Tay Ninh, Tien Giang)and Mekong Delta.
